Seattle Grace Mercy West Hospital, located in Seattle, Washington, is the setting for one of ABC Studio’s best, most profitable new television series, Grey’s Anatomy. Grey’s Anatomy is a medical drama television series that is based on the lives and profession of a group of residents, surgical interns, nurses, doctors, and other physicians that work at Mercy West. The series follows this group of characters throughout various medical and life situations that they encounter on a day to day basis. The premier of Grey’s Anatomy was aired on March 27, 2005 and roped in 16.25 million viewers. It is in the middle of its sixth season right now and has entered into a contract with ABC that will ensure its spot on air until the spring of 2012.

Grey’s Anatomy has had great commercial success and high viewer ratings; it has even turned into one of the prime time television series with the most overall viewers. Since its premier it has won two Emmy’s and two Golden Globes.

The cast was picked in an attempt to make the show racially diverse. This goal was succeeded with the following actors: Ellen Pompeo, Sandra Oh, Justin Chambers, Katherine Heigle, and T.R. Knight. This group of interns are led and mentored by veteran surgeons played by James Pickens Jr., Chandra Wilson, Patrick Dempsey, and Isaiah Washington. Aside from this group of regulars, other actors and actresses were added periodically throughout the six seasons the show was on air.

Grey’s Anatomy has become so popular since its first season that it was made into a mobile game in January 2008. Ubisoft signed an agreement with ABC in early 2009 to develop a Grey’s Anatomy based video game. A video game based on the series was released in March, 2009 for the Nintendo DS and Wii gaming systems as well. While the television show has been greatly received, the video games have gotten relatively low ratings.

All of the completed seasons of Grey’s Anatomy have been released in the United States by Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment, and seasons one through four are currently released in other regions throughout the world.

Grey’s Anatomy can be seen on satellite or cable television on Thursday’s at 8:00 EST on ABC. Viewers can also rent or buy Grey’s Anatomy DVD’s. Grey’s Anatomy website also has a section that describes all of the characters and offers a profile about each character. They have a discussion board where viewers can post messages discussing questions, ideas, and thoughts about Grey’s Anatomy. There is an online store that makes Grey’s Anatomy memorabilia available to the public.

The Grey’s Anatomy website is also host to a section called “Seattle Grace: On Call,” which has daily stories in an online documentary outlining the daily lives of the real interns, doctors, and surgeons at Seattle Grace Hospital. This gives viewers an idea of what really goes on in a hospital on a day to day basis and they are able to see how close Grey’s Anatomy is to the real thing.
